Yes! In order to get a predictable size and fit, you will need to swatch using your chosen yarn and the slip stitch pattern. If you're knitting a swatch just to check colors and practice the stitch, the length of your swatch isn't critical. But when swatching for gauge, be sure you're knitting your swatch long enough to have the space to measure both stitch and row gauge.
